The tentacles of religion reach to all parts of life, and to only object to those that affect us personally is to not say enough.
It affects one, and it affects all.
"Simple credulity can be evil... someone who can see that there are millions of credulous people around will soon take advantage of the fact, and will soon find a way to do so."
- Christopher Hitchens (paraphrased)

Can we ask,
(1) Where is your country? (you have said you were Chinese, but where? Chinese are all over the place ! Smile))
(2) How big is your village?
(3) What is the religious make-up of your country?
(4) What is the religious make-up of your village?
Singapore is like a country in terms of population size, but a village in terms of land area.
Buddhism 42.5%
Islam 14.9%
No religion 14.8%
Christianity 14.6%
Taoism 8.5%
Hinduism 4%
Others 0.6%
Summary: Religious 85%
Also of note is that the Christians of Singapore are largely fundamentalists.
Cool, I am talking to a Singapore person -- That is fun.
So, I am guessing right that most Chinese Christians in Singapore are 2,3,4th generation. They are a sub-community of themselves amidst the Chinese in Singapore.
So when you left your community, you left a huge definition. Me, on the other hand, I can disappear here and people won't really know until asked. Whereas for you, everyone knows.
Is that the case?
Your departure from fundamental Christian Chinese (already a very weird subgroup) is even more radical. It would be like stopping being Amish or Mormon or Jehovah Witness here in the USA in terms of sociological issues.
Yes, indeed some of them are, as you said, 2nd, 3rd, 4th generations, especially those whose fathers are the leaders in the church.
Yes, it was a very special community for me. In fact, it was all I had. In addition, the people who took care of me when I was young were not my parents, so I had no real family. So that community became my family as well.
And yes, the community is very small. Just a few dozen people at most, so everyone is noticed. And I didn't just disappear. I created quite a disturbance in my wake as I left.
It certainly felt radical to me. As I said, I feel as if I have been alienated from all humanity. I think I wouldn't know how to fit into any other community.
Glad you can understand.
I tend to agree with your overall sentiment, but it has been pointed out on my blog that the entirety of religion isn't all bad. The underlying principles of most belief systems are surprisingly similar. For example, quite a few Taoists view Jesus as more Taoist than Jewish OR Christian.
So, could we agree that the institutional aspects are the big enemy?
TRT,
Yes, we could, indeed. The problem with Christians is not that they obey him, but that they ignore his teachings.
The problems with institutions, though, is that they tend to affect individuals as well.
Terrible leaders lead to terrible sheep.
Not all the soldiers under Adolf Hitler were bad. Perhaps you could even say most of them were good, before Hitler took leadership. But once Hitler became the leader officially, disastrous results follow.
The truth is, there are thousands of sheep out there for every one that is lion-hearted enough to oppose evil.
Sounds a bit like a fairy-tale, but I think it's generally true.
