Evolution is just a theory?

So is creationism! It's just a theory!

So it's a matter of which theory has more evidence to back it up. And which is able to make better predictions. Isn't that how science works.

Evolution has fossils, and billions and billions of DNA evidence. Evolution predicts that there will be much speciation. New species have just been discovered in the Mekong area.

Creationism has a book written many years ago by men trying to figure out the universe, or to concoct a religion. Creationism predicts that God will continue to make miracles, and heal amputees.

Which theory has more evidence? Which theory makes false predictions? Which theory would you rather subscribe to?

As I biologist, I am offended by your statement that creationism is a theory.

Creationism cannot be considered a theory in any scientific sense. It does not even qualify as a hypothesis because, by definition, it is untestable. Even the Discovery Institute has yet to devise a scientific test for their religion. Instead, they focus on trying (and alas failing) to undermine evolution, as if they'd win by default.

Only colloquially could one legitimately call creationism a "theory". This does no good for creationism, though, because colloquially, we would call evolution a fact (or a mountain of facts)! And I think a more appropriate colloquial term for creationism would be "story".

I know you and I are on the same side of the debate regarding the legitimacy of creationism, but to call creationism and evolution theories in the same breath is giving creationism undue stature.

Of course, ethinethin, thanks for pointing that out, as a matter of fact. I was obviously pandering to the creationists. (as if they would ever visit this kind of blogs)

It is true that creationism can only be considered as a theory in the colloqial sense. I was only giving in to them a little in order that I might win them with an even stronger argument.

If you tell them from the start that creation is just a story and cannot even be considered as a theory it could turn them off immediately. But again, it might not. So again, thanks for pointing that out.

I admit that I've been bamboozled by all the so-called creation science when I was a Christian into believing creation can also be considered a science, and I continue to show signs of it. I used to be a creationist, you know.

I was a creationist too. I'm not very proud of it, but it's what I was raised in.

After I finally figured that christianity (and religion in general) was false, I looked into science, to see what I was scorning for all those years. Now I'm part of the vast evolutionist conspiracy I always thought must exist.

I always think it's sad that I didn't believe in general scientific principles and wonder how far I'd be now if I hadn't had that burden, but I think it's more sad that there are millions of people out there, corrupting their children and setting them back, potentially gifted scientists, each with potentially creative solutions to major problems.

Of course, the creationists take advantage of scientific progress. They gobble it in with one side of their mouth, with advances in medical science and technology in general, but and defame it with the other.

I would like to think if they realized that science has built-in self-correcting mechanisms that they'd realize how silly their position is, but unfortunately many of them are willfully ignorant. I can't blame them, I was willfully ignorant as well.

As a human, the things your parents teach you stick with you and it's hard to question it. After all, they teach us language, and that tends to stick around.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling now. :)

Don't mind your rambling at all; good story, and helps me know you better.

I wonder too about how far I would have gone if I had been free of the burden of religion, but I guess we all have to play with the hand we were dealt.

So we're fellow ex-creationists. :-D

That probably explains our enthusiasm over this topic, lol.
